Animal Liberation Front

Echo-Terrorism in Britain?

The Animal Liberation Front is considered by many including the MET Police as one of the most active and potentially dangerous militant organizations operating in the U.K today. The organizations believes in "total animal liberation" and has been known to use methods such as arson, bombings, vandalism and harassment in order to forward their goal, leading to them being branded as "echo-terrorists" . Operating in small cells around the U.K the group has no official leader to avoid detection by the authorities, the organization relies on strict codes of anonymity to the point where two "cells" of members do not interact. The reason i have posted this is due to the fact that this group is an operating radicalist, militant organization in the U.K that commits acts of terrorism in its name. Through new technologies the A.L.F are more able now to organize, rally and execute their attacks around the country on animal testing facilities through the use of the internet and the anonymity of the web. Yet i believe we are not completely familiar with them and their politics. In order to better understand this group i've placed a link below to an American think tank "Speaking of Research" which aims to educate people of the importance of animal testing in medicine. Ive included their 5 step programme, diagram which outlines what measures they believe should be undertaken to stop medical facilities being targeted.

Jihadis Have No Friends...On Facebook?

Mina Al Lami's article on The Guardian website puts emphasis on the fact that these extremist organizations are desperate and willing to do anything in order to infiltrate on line communities and find potential members. Which leads me to wonder whether the extremists could be losing this "digital" war for hearts and minds. Her article discusses how Islamic fundamentalist groups attempted to join the famous on line networking website Facebook, she also importantly discusses U.S legislation that has been put into place in order to combat online extremism. My full interview with Mina Al Lami regarding online extremism using information communication technologies will be online soon. Her Article with Ben O'Loughlin is below as well as the link to the Guardian website where the article is featured:

Jihadis try to make friends on Facebook

If the social networking site helped Barack Obama win an election, why not use it to organise holy war?

Is the BNP a Racist and Prejudice Party? Lets Ask!

Fresh from their two seat, five figure funded win at the European Parliament last year the BNP have embarked on a crusade to clean up their image in order to appeal to the mass electorate. With over 54 councillors around the country and a membership pushing 18,000, their supporters have deigned them the "peoples party". The truth is, the masses have yet to engage with the BNP in a way as to understand the party and its ideology. In regards to online extremism the BNP is incredibly active with countless forums and online campaigns (Their recent "Cool to be White" t-shirt campagin has split opinion intensly in online forums)

Why do people keep joining up? Does the BNP have anything else to offer other than hate speech and racially charged sound bites?

Lets ask them!

This is what i asked official spokesperson and editor of the BNP party website Michael Woods. Please tell me what you think? What about this interview made you angry? Was it insightful? What would have you asked?
Interview is Below:

1-What are the core principles of the British National Party?

The core principles of the British National Party are Freedom, Security, Identity and Democracy (FSID)

2-If the party wasn't faced with legal action from the Equality and Human Rights Commission do you believe the BNP would have changed its entrance policy to allow non whites into the party?

Yes, because the party leadership attempted to change our constitution as far back as 2004, before any such legal action was threatened. The politically immature members scuppered the proposed amendments at that time.

This move was designed to destroy us, the EHRC has taken onboard too much propaganda regarding our membership. They imagined that the party would split down the middle, or completely reject the amendments which would have forced the party to fight in court and eventually face bankruptcy. The EHRC were shocked to find that, far from rejecting the idea of ethnic minority members outright, the majority of the membership actually welcomed the move. Not only did their bungling gift us with masses of publicity, but also boosted our membership to more than 18,000.

3-What expectations/attributes would there be on a non-white member if they joined the party?

We now have non-white members. They have settled into party activism without any trouble at all. I expect that patriotic Asian or Black members wouldn’t demand special treatment, or segregation into satellite organisations, similar to the type run by the Tories and Labour. In the BNP it is accepted that you are a British Nationalist, your politics comes before your ethnicity, gender and sexuality.
Unlike the old parties, the BNP does not wish to exploit ‘token’ ethnic minorities. We want you to join us because you believe in our policies and mission.

4- Associations with pro life groups such as "Life League" and "Youth Defence" have dictated the public's perception of the BNP's policies. Does the party plan on actually changing abortion legislation in the UK?

To my knowledge, no official pledge has been given to amend abortion legislation. However, the party is broadly pro-life.

5- How would the BNP's policies aid us into economic recovery?
We would save more than £100 billion pounds per year by leaving the European Union. When we have a debt approaching £1.4 Trillion, it’s time to start making repayments and you can only make repayments by raising taxes, or cutting services. We would cut parts of the unproductive public sector, such as the whole tax-payer funded industries that have sprung up during Labour’s tenure. The savings add up.

6-Many people believe that your party is inherently racist and prejudice, what would you say to them?
This belief has some historical basis. In the past, extremist members of the party have given credence to this accusation because of their activities. Thankfully, under the leadership of Nick Griffin, the party has managed to purge political extremists. We have not merely hidden these people in the background, unlike Lib/Lab/Con; we have cut all ties with organisations which may harbour such people.
Today, the majority of our membership is composed of former Labour and Conservative voters. In reality, our members are normal mainstream members of society (albeit patriotic) just like yourself. They ‘want something done’ about immigration, the health service, education and jobs. These are hardly the subjects of interest to Neo-Nazis.
Further, the party now accepts members from all ethnic groups. This move was overwhelmingly supported by the party membership, 98.7% of whom voted yes to the amendment.  As a result, the party now counts patriotic British Blacks and Asians amongst the membership.
Never forget, the Labour and Conservative parties of the past would also be deemed racist by today’s standards. Is it fair to maintain that belief in spite of all the evidence to the contrary. The BNP only asks for the same consideration and ‘fair play’ that other legal, democratic political parties receive, and no more.

7-Do you think the main stream media has reported the BNP's politics and policies accurately?

The MSM are incapable of reporting our politics and policies accurately because the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) forbids their members to report on the party in an impartial manner. However, since the election of two BNP MEPs there are a growing number of fair and balanced articles appearing.

8-What do you believe are the key factors in the BNP's recent success at the EU elections?
Party Chairman Nick Griffin described the conditions leading up to the election as a ‘Perfect Storm’, he was referring to the political climate at that moment in time. The MP’s expenses scandal had severely damaged the reputation of the parliamentary parties. UKIP and the BNP were outside the blast radius of the public’s anger. Our campaign slogan became ‘Punish the Pigs’, a theme which seemed to resonate with the public perception of MPs as greedy cash-hungry swine. Incidentally, it was a BNP official who blew the lid on the MP’s expenses scandal.
Without the expenses scandal and economic doom and gloom, I believe that party would still have taken 1 seat. Due to the fact that this was our largest, and most expensive, professional campaign we had ever waged. A campaign based on one simple and popular policy – total withdrawal. No renegotiation, no reform.
The media class retaliated during the campaign with an assault so ferocious that many of the electorate started to question their motives. The media drove people into our arms. It’s a bit like the Vatican announcing that a book is evil, its sales soar. We fully enjoyed our abuse at the hands of unpopular Labour politicians, their denouncements met with a common response: “he doesn’t want us to vote BNP, so I will vote BNP”. And almost 1 million people did.
We acknowledge that the conditions prior to the election were favourable, but the party managed to harvest votes through our own hard work.

Al Qaeda Recruitment Video: Pakistan

Al Qaeda Recruitment Video: Pakistan

Politicians and pundits alike are still not completely unified as to what significance Pakistan is to a militant organization like Al Qaeda, some say it is their strong hold whilst others claim the clashes in the Sawat Valley are due to sectarian violence and not instigated by Al Qaeda. The reason why i believe this is relevant to extremism in the U.K is because it is still disputed as to whether these training videos and other on line media have a significant part to play in turning a U.K citizen into an extremist. Also the fact is that many extremists from the U.K (Al Qaeda members and other militant islamic organizations members) will visit Pakistan and attend these training camps. We must try and understand why. Why did Mohammad Sidique Khan attend training camps with the intention to kill British civilians? Is it just a question of cultural disenfranchisement? Why did he feel the compulsion to commit the atrocities that he did? Unless we can understand the mind set we will never be able to stop the problem.

What do you think?

What makes a terrorist? Can one be indoctrinated by on line extremist groups?
Below I've placed a link to part of an Al Qaeda training video and an on line pod-cast of Jonathan Paris' lecture at the International Center for the Study of Radicalism where he identifies terrorist activity as one of the 5 main challenges Pakistan must overcome.

Islamic Extremism Online?

Islamic Extremism Online?
One of the biggest threats to young British, muslims today are extremist Islamic groups that operate in and through the U.K. With case studies and reports from MET Police Intelligence and the International Center for the Study of Radicalism many are now realizing the potential role the Internet has had to play in terrorist atrocities around the globe. Specifically in relation to the 7th July bombings, the bombers where suspected to have created links to Al Qaeda and Jemaah Islamiyah on line.
Through email and exchanges of radicalist on-line media they began to travel to training camps, ( in particular Mohammad Sidique Khan traveled to extremist camps in Pakistan and Afghanistan in 2003) until finally they planned and executed their bombings in London on 07/07/2005.
To better understand this hypothesis that the internet is a contributor in indoctrinating disenfranchized peoples to militant organizations, ive posted a link to the ICSR's report entitled "The Challenge of Online Radicalization: A Strategy for Action"
http://www.icsr.info/search.php?search-term=internet&search=Go

But we must also question "Can the internet solely be responsible for turning someone into a terrorist?" Is there a line that must be crossed in order for a zealous extremist to turn into someone who perpetrates murder and terrorism in the name of ideology?

Digital Extremism

Statement of Intent
Are information Communication Technologies Responsible for Creating a Terrorist Threat?
The digital age has ignited a communication revolution but are extremist groups abusing this new technology in order to further their agenda and plan to cause harm to others?
I will look at the ways in which extremist militant groups and radical groups such as Al Qaeda and Hamas use information communication technologies in order to network and spread their radical ideas. My goal is to come to a conclusion on whether ICT is aiding extremism.
I will analyze case studies such as the report on the 7th July bombings in London in which the bombers communicated and were exposed to extremist literature and video online. Using Blogger.com I will attempt to create a forum on which issues are explored, the blog will feature links and shortcuts to articles on CNET news, Guardian.co.uk, Aljazeera.com and the website for the ICSR (International Centre for the Study of Radicalism), It will also feature links to documentaries on Channel 4 such as “Dispatches: Britain Under Attack” which explores the recent heightened terrorist threat level in the U.K and also how the internet is a vital component in networking for Al Qaeda

I will also be looking at extremist groups that have their headquarters and operate within the U.K such as the British National Party and IRA, posting links to their forums and encouraging people to engage in debate on certain issues such as immigration, P.C culture and politics. My blog will also feature an interview with Mina Al Lami, a guardian contributor and expert in the field she recently conducted a study and did a thesis at London School of Economics on radical groups using information communication technologies in order to recruit new members. My blog will not only have links to other websites, as I intend to open up a dialogue on this rarely discussed issue I will publish it and encourage people to give their own opinions.
I will also have a section entitled Freedom of Speech, under which I will post links to different laws in the U.K and U.S that attempt to combat this new form of “digital terrorism” and ask whether removing extremist websites is equivalent to violating freedom of speech. Is it a fruitless endeavor to shut down these websites as they will just spring up again or by shutting these websites down are the authorities temporarily crippling terrorist groups?
By connecting different extremist groups from around the world such as Hamas and Hezbollah has the digital age plunged us into a new era of terrorism like non other that we have ever seen? Finally after concluding my research I will include my own opinions on ICTS and terrorism and explore whether the benefits of the digital age outweigh the negative aspects, or whether the danger that we encounter due to the communication revolution is too heavy a price to pay.

Birth of Open Discourse

Birth of the Discourse
Extremism has always existed, whether it be present in our cultural practices, our rituals, political ideology or religious belief. Post 9/11 we have been plunged into a world rampant with ideas of extremism and terrorism. Open Discourse's main purpose is to bridge the gap between those marginalized, disenfranchised peoples and the status quo through debate and an open discourse that for far too long has not existed. This blog has absolutely no political or religious affiliation and most certainly does not glorify or excuse the actions of any extremist group that engages in terrorist activity.

Open discourse operates on the basis that extremists are not born but created.
